John Stamos suffering from… ER… jet lag
John Stamos, late of Full House, now of ER, seems to be following in the footsteps of Paula Abdul, or rather, the missteps. On a media tour in Australia earlier this week, he apparently slurred and strangely gesticulated his way through one TV interview, as related by host Olivia Bishop on the blog of [...]

Maybe someone else should take the media interviews…
In answer to Margie Zable Fisher’s Top Ten Reason’s Why PR Doesn’t Work, Brian Solis came up with Why PR Doesn’t Work and How to Fix It (thanks to Point Being for pointing it out).
Solis makes a lot of very useful points, but for my purposes, this piece of advice for clients was particularly [...]

How’s your credibility in media interviews?
There’s a good lesson in this quote from PR/media training legend Chet Burger:
the biggest problem in PR or the biggest problem of persuasion as not getting the audience’s attention-that’s what most public relations people worry about, how can I get my story in print, how can I get attention for it…. I’ve always found the [...]

Dazed and confused in swivel city
Here’s the most detailed explanation I’ve found by Paula Abdul herself (posted on MeeVee), for her odd behaviour in those recent TV satellite interviews. Accepting her explanation here still doesn’t answer why she or her handlers didn’t stop the interview and say ‘there’s a problem or I’m so tired I can’t do this, etc.’ [...]

Runaway train syndrome
Just saw one of these TV interviews this morning - you know the kind - the guest breathlessly rattles out an answer and the interviewer has to cut in to ask the next question and you can see or feel the guest literally shaking with anticipation to jump in again and continue talking. Often [...]

Emotional branding in media interviews
Rob Amberg of of Cushman/Amberg Communications in St. Louis posted an interesting piece about Emotional Branding on his Transom blog (love the name - visit the blog to get the background on it). He talks about how Matt Miller, the CEO of Playworld Systems uses ads and media exposure to promote his company by [...]

Idol judge misjudges
Been a lot of talk about a TV interview with American Idol judge Paula Abdul on January 11. People are saying she was drunk; her spokesperson says she was tired after three straight days of media interviews (see his comments below the video). Whatever the cause of her wild swaying and slurred words, she [...]

In praise of frequent job changes by media people
“I remember she was great on air, sure we’ll book her.” What was interesting about this producer’s response was that he remembered this guest from a radio station where he used to work. Now he’s a TV producer and is booking an interview, no questions asked, because the woman had added value to [...]

It’s the waiting that can kill you
I had a client deliver a below-average TV interview the other day and a lot of it was because she lacked energy. I asked her later whether she didn’t get enough sleep or if she had something on her mind - turns out she was suffering from what I call “green room fatigue”. [...]

One shot to sound intelligent
From FemaleScienceProfessor:
the few media interviews I did were very disconcerting. It’s very different from teaching — when you teach, you have lots of opportunities to say things in several different ways until you are sure you get the point across. In an interview, you get one shot to sound intelligent. Or not.
