Revolutionizing documentary production
I’ve been posting recently about how the internet is making it possible for edited interviews to be supplemented with full transcripts or full video/audio. So it was very interesting to stumble upon the Echo Chamber Project, a collaborative video documentary being constructed on the web. Part of the production process is to post the transcripts of all the interviews conducted, both in video and text formats.
It’s going to be very interesting to see the finished documentary and then be able to compare it with the full material they had to work with, as well as to see the documented history of editing choices, etc. While this sort of openness won’t end problems such as taking an interview quote out of context, it does put extra pressure on journalists not to be sloppy or to slant their stories - the evidence will be sitting on line for anyone to link to from a blog.
BTW, this is not meant to be an endorsement of the documentary itself; my interest lies only in the process of production.
