Connecting to your audience via movies
PR and Marketing expert Susan Harrow recently posted this idea for netting yourself some publicity: “Think about how you can comment on social situations or stories that drive a movie”. For instance, if you’re a relationships expert, you could send out a press release mentioning tips for people who want to split up but are staying together for practical reasons, as a tie-in for the popular film “The Break Up”.
To apply this to interview skills - make it a habit to try and find connections between what you’re talking about and some current social trend, movie, book, etc. The more popular the better, so it’s likely your audience will know what you’re talking about.
This isn’t about name-dropping for it’s own sake (so make sure there really IS a connection); it’s about connecting with your audience through something they know and care about. Sometimes those connections will be obvious - if you’re interviewed about your book on classic automobiles, then be sure to see the movie “Cars” and talk about how the animators portrayed classic cars. But try to be creative as well. Perhaps you can find something in “The Da Vinci Code” that connects with your work on corporate management….
